John Powers School Summer

John Powers School recently finished up another successful extended school year program.  This summer's learning theme was animals.  Each week, students went on fields trips associated with a specific animal group, and throughout the week, JPS staff incorporated lessons and projects about that animal group into the academic curriculum.

Specific themes included farm animals, with a trip to Charmingfare Farm; ocean animals, with a trip to the Boston Aquarium; animals of the rainforest with a visit to the Rainforest Café; and zoo animals where Wild Life Encounters came to JPS for an afternoon!

Students practiced positive behaviors throughout the day during summer program.  During academic times in the morning, students used skills to complete challenging work, ask for help appropriately, and work and play with peers properly.  Students had many opportunities this summer to work in partners and small groups on academic work.

Students went into the community on a daily basis to practice real-world skills eating out at restaurants such as Friendley’s, Pizza Hut and the Rainforest Café.  They also practiced social skills at the bowling alley, the video game arcade, on the miniature golf course and at The Works Athletic Club pool, a trip made weekly.

We look forward to another exciting summer next year!
