Perry grew up in Laconia, New Hampshire. His studies at Gordon College led to an interest in theology and into the study of Greek and Hebrew, which he added to his previous studies in French and Spanish. After working with teenagers in the inner city and in anti-poverty programs, he worked in Washington D.C. in environmental programs and presidential politics. In 1988 an ESOL tutoring position in Somersworth, NH brought him back to his original interest in teaching and to a long, fulfilling career as an ESOL teacher.
